Killers – Day And Age

Saxophones. That’s the thing I’ll take from my couple of weeks with Day and age. Saxophones. And not just any saxophones. These are ABC, Wham style brass orgies.

With 2004 debut hot fuss, The Killers had worn their 80′s anglophile influences clearly enough on the tops of their sleeves but this is more like the eighties of George Michael than Simon Le Bon.

Lyrically it’s another odd fish. where as before you may have been willing to ignore nonsensical musings such as ‘I got soul but I’m not a soldier’, with nothing quite as distracting  to attach them to ‘are we human, or are we dancer’ sits rather awkwardly.  And that’s far from the only offender.

There is some fun to be had opener Losing touch has a solid Killers feel (with added sax), Human is rousing enough but put simply there is nothing as thrilling as Mr Brightside or as purely good as Read my mind.

So will The Killers remain one of our favourite American imports in these fiscally testing times? This feels like a step back to the inspiration that birthed Hot Fuss without any of the magic of that conception.

And Saxophones.
