White Denim @ The Ritz, Manchester.
This is an oddly astonishing gig, more Art/Technical exercise than inclusive gig. The exuberance and technicality of some of the guitar playing is mind blowing. And all the other middle aged beardy men agree. ‘Bring back Jethro Tull’ I almost imagine the most ardent rockers amongst them shouting.
White Denim are an amalgam of proggish time signatures and the grooving mentality of Creedence or Lynyrd Skynyrd. Imagine Freebird played by King Crimson.
My mind is taken back to seeing a DVD of Freebird being performed on The Old Grey Whistle Test. As the soloist entered minute 5 of this astonishing fret-wank, the camera zooms in ever closer and I was certain the guys fingers were going to explode covering Bob Harris in a gruey mixture of bone and gristle.
White Denim take this to the n’th degree as they segue one virtuoso guitar performance into another with barely a breath taken between songs when they bother to have one.
A staccato, swamp rock joy.
